Students who have been dancing for a few years will build on their already established technique, and those who have been dancing for many years will excel in their chosen discipline, and may even look towards a career in the performing arts. Dance allows students to increase their musicality, coordination, muscle strength and self confidence, whist also allowing them to make further friendships and connections with students outside their own grade.
Our classes are curated with a more ‘open’ style, so students are not pressured to perfect entire syllabuses or exercises for an exam. Instead, exercises and activities are catered and differentiated for each child, allowing all students to feel success, building their confidence within each dance style.
All classes are run in our Dance and Drama space – Green Hall
Miss Suzie Searight is an established choreographer, performer, artist and teacher who actively works with the Townsville Dance community. Suzie moved to Brisbane and completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance at The Queensland University of Technology to pursue her passion for movement and creativity.
Through her course she also gained her Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies with the Royal Academy of Dance and teacher training with Dance for Parkinson’s Australia. During her time in Brisbane she worked with Queensland Ballet, performed in the Opening Ceremony for the Commonwealth Games, trained with industry professionals and built her love for choreography.
Suzie has been teaching with local companies such as the Ann Roberts School of Dance and Dancenorth Australia and has been choreographing for organisations such as Ulysses Dancers, NQOMT and the Townsville Choral Society to further strengthen and develop the performing arts scene in Townsville.
The Cathedral School has three performance troupes for students of varying age and ability
levels. Students who attend dance lessons at Cathedral, or dance lessons outside of school, can audition for the various troupes at the beginning of each school year.
Students will attend one scheduled rehearsal each week, as well as extra rehearsals and workshops when needed. Students in the performance troupes will have the opportunity to compete in the Townsville Eisteddfod, and will also get to perform at the end of year Dance Concert, at various school events, and at some events around Townsville.
There are four dance styles offered to students from Prep to Year 12. Students can enrol in Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop and Contemporary, and will be split across classes based on age and ability. Classes are held predominantly in the afternoon between 3.30 and 7.00pm; however, some classes occur in the morning from 7.15 – 8.15am. Each class consists of a warmup, various technique exercises, and choreographic learning experiences.
At the end of each semester, each class will host an ‘open class’ for dance families. Parents/carers and extended family members will be invited to sit and watch classes to see what students have been learning throughout the term and how they have progressed.
All students will also be a part of the yearly dance concert, held in the middle of Term 4. Each class will learn a dance and rehearse it throughout Terms 3 and 4, and then get to perform on stage in front of a large audience. This performance experience is great for students to showcase their hard work and share their passion for Dance.
Dance Scholarships are available for those students entering Year 7.
