Year 12 Biology Camp 2024 – Orpheus Island

Year 12 Biology Camp 2024 – Orpheus Island

The annual Year 12 Biology Camp is one of the highlights of the senior school curriculum. The students spend four days based at the JCU Orpheus Island Research Station – a World-Class Research and Teaching facility on the Great Barrier Reef.

‘On Thursday the 15th of February, the Year 12 Biology students travelled to Orpheus Island where they spent their days snorkelling and using transects and quadrats to collect data in a Fringing Coral Reef Flat Ecosystem. We connected with Professor Morgan Pratchett, a conservation ecologist based at James Cook University, Australia. The knowledge and skills that students acquired while working with Professor Morgan was fantastic.’

One of the highlights of the year, the Hidden Valley Camp is something that creates life-long memories for the Year 5 students. Located in the Paluma National Park, the young adventurers get to explore some of the most rugged and beautiful environments that North QLD has to offer, with challenges and activities such as raft building, archery, abseiling, bike riding, and more.

Camp Compassion

Camp Compassion

‘Camp Compassion is run annually for a group of Year 5 and 6 children. It is a camp like no other and certainly not for the faint-hearted.  Just ask any of those who have attended!’

‘Camp Compassion is neither easy nor fair.

Our children are challenged to live life, if only just for one night, in the same way that children do in countries less privileged than our own. They step into the worlds of children who have to earn money at a young age to support families, they have to take on roles that adults would usually hold, they have to prepare their own food from scratch, and many other tasks.  They learn to work in situations of adversity and their own values are challenged.

Happily, most of our children step up, look after each other and reflect well on their learning from their time. They all come away with an increased appreciation for their lives in our middle-class Australia!’

Writers’ Camp

Writers’ Camp

Gumburu, Paluma.
by Lucy Edelman – Year 8

Writer Camp 2022 was an extremely enjoyable experience. Our guest writer, Sheryl Gwyther, taught us many things about keeping short stories concise, developing characters, and adding twists at the end of our writing.

We went on a sensory trail walk, where we were able to use our other senses apart from sight, as we were blindfolded. Between the many competitions and fun moments, we learned a lot about writing short stories and how to improve our writing quality. With Sheryl’s guidance and feedback, we were all able to create entertaining, quality pieces of writing and walk away with new skills in storytelling.

This camp was extremely enjoyable, and I would definitely recommend it.
