Following a comprehensive selection process, Counterpoint Architecture has been officially appointed as The Cathedral School’s architectural partner for our upcoming Master Plan Review and future works.
“Counterpoint is a Townsville-based Architecture studio with deep roots in North Queensland. We are a wholly locally owned and operated practice led by co-directors Zammi Rohan and Mark Kennedy. Our team of 16 has a long history of working across the region, and we’ve built a reputation for innovative, practical, client-focused design that reflects local lifestyles and context. But more than that, we care deeply about the future of our region and believe that good architecture should contribute to something bigger, connecting people to place and enabling communities to thrive. Some key projects include the Queensland Country Bank Stadium (with Cox), Riverway Library, and The Oasis.

Our appointment as Architect for The Cathedral School is an exciting opportunity to help guide a future vision for the campus that’s rooted in connection, shaped through consultation, and responsive to the needs of a close-knit school community. From our very first conversations, we’ve been impressed by the strength of Cathedral’s culture, a place where relationships matter, heritage is respected, and progress is embraced with purpose. We believe the best outcomes emerge when the people who live and learn in a place are actively involved in shaping it, and our approach will be centred around meaningful, inclusive engagement at every stage.

Our commitment to the community extends well beyond our project work. We’re active contributors to the wider profession and Townsville’s ongoing evolution. Zammi currently serves as Regional Chair for the Australian Institute of Architects and sits on the board of Community Gro, while Mark is the regional representative of the Association of Consulting Architects. As a practice, we’re proud founding members of ‘Uptown‘, an initiative aimed at revitalising the Townsville CBD, and organisers of ‘BES•Tville‘, a series of events that bring together leading voices to explore ideas for regional growth and innovation. These efforts reflect our core belief that good design is just one part of building a better future. It also takes advocacy, leadership, and meaningful community engagement.

For us, the opportunity to work with The Cathedral School is not just about shaping buildings; it’s about contributing to a legacy. Whether it’s responding to the loss of the iconic raintree at Connection Place or exploring how the campus can evolve to support contemporary learning, we’re here to help guide the process. Together, we hope to shape a campus that not only serves current needs but continues to strengthen the bonds of the Cathedral community for generations to come.”
Zammi & Mark – Counterpoint Architecture
“On behalf of the selection panel and our broader school community, we extend our warmest congratulations to the Counterpoint Team, led by Zammi Rohan and Mark Kennedy. Their submission and presentation truly stood out with clarity, creativity, and a strong alignment with our vision for the future of The Cathedral School. What impressed us most was their thoughtful, future-focused design approach, combined with a warm and professional communication style. Their strong local ties to Townsville, genuine commitment to collaboration, and dedication to working with local people and businesses closely reflect our school’s values.
The panel also appreciated their inclusive engagement model, their capacity to work effectively with consultants and contractors, and their well-considered approach to resourcing for the long term. Counterpoint’s presentation not only responded clearly to our brief but also offered inspiring and practical ideas that demonstrated a deep understanding of our campus and community.
While this appointment marks an exciting milestone, Counterpoint’s work with us is only just beginning. Over the coming months, they look forward to consulting widely with all stakeholders (students, staff, families, alumni, and the broader school community) to help shape a shared vision for our campus and its future. We are incredibly excited to begin this journey and build a strong, collaborative partnership with Counterpoint Architecture. Together, we will shape the next phase of The Cathedral School’s physical environment, creating spaces that support the learning, well-being, and aspirations of our staff and students for years to come.”
