Cathedral Students Shine in Science and Engineering Competitions

Students from The Cathedral School of St Anne and St James have once again demonstrated their outstanding talent and passion for STEM, achieving exceptional results across two major academic competitions in Townsville.

On Friday, 1 May, a talented group of Year 9 and 10 students represented the School at the National Science and Engineering Challenge, competing against schools from across the region in a series of hands-on science, engineering and problem-solving challenges.

Throughout the day, students worked collaboratively to tackle activities designed to test their creativity, communication, critical thinking and teamwork under pressure. Their determination and enthusiasm paid off, with The Cathedral School proudly named the Champion School for the event.

Head of Science, Rebecca Smith said the results were a reflection of both the students’ dedication and the strong culture of scientific learning within the School.

“We are incredibly proud of the outstanding efforts of our Year 12 Chemistry students at the JCU Titration Competition. To achieve 1st, 3rd and 5th place against 18 teams from six schools is a remarkable accomplishment and highlights the skill, precision and teamwork of our students.

Interest in the competition was exceptionally strong this year, with 25 students across Years 11 and 12 expressing interest in participating. The nine students selected to represent the School committed to additional training sessions to further develop their practical laboratory skills and prepare for the competition environment.

While the competition no longer advances to a national final, based on these results, two of our teams would have qualified, making the achievement even more significant.

I would also like to sincerely thank John Bamber and Jane Gioffre for their support and guidance in helping prepare our students for the event.

The achievement reflects the strength of the School’s growing STEM programs and the dedication of students who continue to embrace opportunities beyond the classroom.

Adding to the celebrations, our Year 12 Chemistry students also excelled at the recent JCU Titration Competition hosted by James Cook University.

Competing against 18 teams from six different schools, Cathedral students delivered an outstanding performance, securing an impressive clean sweep of the top ranks with 1st, 3rd and 5th place finishes.

The titration competition required students to apply advanced laboratory techniques with precision and accuracy, showcasing both their scientific knowledge and practical skills in a university-level setting.

These achievements are a testament to the commitment, curiosity and hard work of our students, as well as the support and guidance provided by our Science faculty.

Congratulations to all students involved in representing The Cathedral School with pride.
