Rowing Academy

The Cathedral School has a proud reputation as one of the leading rowing schools in Queensland, with several past students furthering their competition at a National level.

Rowing is available for boys and girls from Year 7 through to Year 12. Training is held on the Ross River which runs through our beautiful suburb of Mundingburra, a short walk from the school campus.

REGISTRATIONS

Learn to Row:
Week 3, Term 1 – Years 7/8

• Years 7/8: Will receive an email with instructions.
• Year 8: Try out sessions offered in HPE lessons at the start of Term 1.

Year 9 to 12 Squad Registration:
Monday 7 February (from 9am).

Boys – Wednesday Afternoons
Girls – Thursday Afternoons
Boys & Girls – Saturday Mornings
Learn to Row is also open to Year 9 to Year 12 students new to the school or program.

• Local season ends: Head of the River Regatta – August 2025
• Cathedral QLD School Championships Team: September 2025

COST

All Rowers:
$275 per school term (2025 cost TBC)
Inclusions:
• All training sessions with a qualified coach – including on the water and land training sessions at school.
• Use of rowing equipment.

Potential Additional Costs:
• Rowing attire.
• Cost to attend Away Regattas.
• Learn to Row: $75 JCU membership.
• Squad: $317 JCU membership (Rowers), $111 JCU membership (Coxswains) for Term 2 and Term 3.

Training:
• Training schedule varies for different age groups, with the number of training sessions increasing by year level.
• The local regatta season includes a regatta every 2nd weekend.

Rowing Coach

Simon Davis brings with him a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success in rowing coaching and program development.

Simon’s rowing journey began as a student in Tasmania, where he was a member of the State Champion Schoolboys VIII and IV, and Schoolboy Single Scull State Champion for St Virgil’s College. His coaching career began shortly after, where he led St Mary’s College to significant achievements, including guiding the U/16 Girls VIII to a commendable 4th place at the Tasmanian Schools Head of the River.

In recent years, Simon has continued to demonstrate excellence in coaching, including:

  • Coaching multiple State and Club Championship medallists in Tasmania and Queensland.
  • Developing young athletes to achieve multiple State and National Championship medals.
  • Coaching Queensland’s State Men’s Quadruple Scull at the 2024 National Championships.
  • Delivering successful programs at the Griffith University Surfers Paradise Rowing Club, expanding both their schools’ pathways and Learn to Row initiatives.

Simon holds a Rowing Australia Level 2 Coaching Accreditation and is committed to fostering a positive and inclusive culture where every athlete feels valued, safe, and supported to reach their full potential.
