From Townsville to the Paddock: Cathedral School Boarders Thrive at AWE Agricultural Camp in St George.

A group of fourteen boarding students from The Cathedral School Townsville recently swapped their school uniforms for boots and broad-brimmed hats as they travelled to St George, Queensland, to take part in the AWE (Agriculture, Water, and Environment) Program. This immersive agricultural education tour made possible thanks to the promotion of the program at the of the Isolated Children’s Parents’ Association (ICPA) Queensland State Conference.
Over the course of the week, students were immersed in the realities of rural life and modern agriculture, gaining hands-on experience and insights into one of Australia’s most vital industries.

Day 1: From Hay Bales to Dam Wall
The adventure began with a ride in a tractor as hay was baled at St George State High School—an exciting introduction to the week ahead. Students then visited Cooinda, a hay and cotton farm, where they learned to count cotton plants per metre and explored the science behind crop density, soil health, and water usage.
Irrigation techniques were a key focus, with students trying their hand at the syphon method using black poly pipe—a fun and practical challenge that had everyone laughing and learning. Later, a visit to the local dam, guided by a SunWater representative, offered a deeper understanding of regional water catchment systems. The day wrapped up with a tour of St George State High School’s impressive agricultural facilities, a game of touch footy on the oval, and a relaxed evening of board games like Cattle Baron and a lively Cattle Quiz.

Day 2: Agronomy and Feedlots
The second day kicked off with a visit from Zara, a passionate agronomist who shared her journey into the profession and the diverse opportunities it offers. Students were inspired by her enthusiasm and the real-world applications of agricultural science. We also took soil samples and learned about soils and seeds.
In the afternoon, the group toured the Moonie River Feedlot, where they met Justin, who connected the dots between chemistry, history, and modern feedlot operations.

Day 3: From Paddocks to the Skies
The third day began with a tour of Moonrocks, a major garlic and onion farm that supplies 90% of Australia’s onions. “Next time you’re eating a Maccas burger, just think—that onion came all the way from St George.
After lunch, the group visited a cotton gin, where they learned about the process of ginning cotton. The day ended with a visit to Speedo’s spray planes, where students were amazed by the precision and bravery required to fly so low over crops.

Day 4: Goats, Carrots, and Machines
The final day began with a surprise—goat herding at the school farm. “I’m not one made for chasing cattle,” said Kaitlin, “but we were made to chase goats bright and early this morning. Let’s just say it was an interesting experience!”
The group then visited a carrot farm, where a broken harvester offered an unexpected lesson in the challenges of agricultural machinery. After a riverside lunch, they toured two more cotton farms, learning about advanced irrigation and harvesting techniques. The day concluded with a visit to RDO Equipment, where students explored the cutting-edge technology behind John Deere machinery—and even got to drive diggers and bobcats.

A Week to Remember
Throughout the week, students not only gained practical skills and industry knowledge but also developed a deeper appreciation for the people and processes that keep Australia’s agricultural sector thriving. The AWE Program provided a platform for learning, leadership, and connection—values that align closely with The Cathedral School’s commitment to holistic education.
The school also extends its sincere gratitude to St George State High School and Balonne Shire Council for their outstanding hospitality and partnership.
As the students return to Townsville after a 15 hour bus trip, the AWE Agricultural Camp has planted seeds of inspiration that will no doubt grow for years to come.
