Cathedral Sport Round-Up

June 2, 2026

It has been another busy and successful period for Cathedral students across a range of sports, with outstanding individual performances, representative honours and team achievements.

Our students achieve great things in sport every week. While we regularly share highlights on social media, many achievements occur behind the scenes and deserve recognition. This sports round-up celebrates some of the recent successes of Cathedral students representing the School, region and state across a variety of sports.

Gymnastics Success at State Level

Congratulations to Oliver P. (Year 7) on an exceptional performance at the State Gymnastics Championships. Oliver claimed 1st place on Rings, 3rd place on High Bar, and 4th place on Vault, showcasing his dedication and skill against some of Queensland’s best gymnasts.

Rugby 7s State Championship Selection

We wish Ella V. all the best as she represents North Queensland in the Under 18 Girls Rugby 7s State Championships on the Sunshine Coast. Selection in the North Queensland team is a significant achievement, and we look forward to hearing about her experience at the tournament.

Northern Netball Representatives

Congratulations to Rosie M., Toby T., Jacob S., Nash S. and Lucy M. on representing the Northern Region at the 10–12 Years Netball State Championships in Brisbane.

Competing against the state’s best players is a wonderful achievement, and we commend each student on their effort, sportsmanship and performance throughout the championship.

Cross Country Athletes Earn State Championship Selection

Twenty-four Cathedral Junior School students recently competed at the Interschool Cross Country Championships at Bicentennial Park. Against strong fields of between 120 and 140 runners in each age group, nine Cathedral students finished in the top 10 and progressed to the Northern Cross Country Trials.

From there, six students secured places in the Northern Team and will travel to Toowoomba to compete at the Queensland State Cross Country Championships. We congratulate all students who participated and wish our state representatives every success.

Historic Result at the Obe Geia Challenge

Our Junior School Rugby League Academy students achieved a milestone result at the annual Obe Geia Challenge on Palm Island.

The team went undefeated through four pool matches to finish at the top of their group before progressing to the grand final. After a hard-fought contest against Rasmussen State School, Cathedral finished as runners-up.

This marks the first time Cathedral has reached the Obe Geia Challenge grand final, making it a significant achievement for the players and coaching staff.

Hockey Recognition

Congratulations to Harper and Hayley, who recently competed in the 16–19 Years Hockey final in Cairns, earning a silver medal performance.

Adding to the achievement, Hayley was selected in the Queensland Merit Team, a wonderful recognition of her talent and performance throughout the competition.

We congratulate all students on their recent sporting achievements and thank the staff, coaches, parents and supporters who continue to help our young athletes thrive both on and off the field.
