Sports Awards 2022

Sports Awards 2022

The Middle and Senior School celebrated the year in sport with the annual Sports Awards assembly in the Rock Centre.

Head of Sport, John Rauch acknowledged the increasing diversity of sports at The Cathedral School and the high level of success and representation by Cathedral students on a local, state, and national level, both within the school program and independently. Congratulations to all students, staff, and families who have dedicated their time and commitment to their sport and balancing this with other school curricula.

Cathedral Rowing – Best in QLD

Cathedral Rowing – Best in QLD

Congratulations State Champions – for the second year in a row we can say we are the best rowing school in Queensland!
by Kim Brown – Rowing Coach

The 3 days of competition, ever-changing conditions, and gruelling heat were no match for our Cathedral athletes. I could not be prouder of our athletes’ attitudes, teamwork, and comradery, they banded together to ensure everyone was supported no matter the results. With our dedicated athletes overcoming challenges and working together as a team we have arrived safely home with 10.5 Gold, 6.25 Silver, and 2.75 Bronze bringing us to a total of 19.5 medals. 6 more gold than any other school!

As we all come down from the high that has been the last few days, I would like to start with a few special thank you. Firstly, a big thank you to Terri Talbot for agreeing to come along and assist with the supervision of the kids, you were amazing! Another big thank you to Jacob Groves and Shaun Keough for driving the trailer to Bundaberg and back, without these two coaches we would not have had boats to row. Thank you to the coaches for all their hard work and effort in the lead-up to states and to all the coaches that came on the trip. Without our brilliant coach’s passion for the sport, we would not be where we are today. And finally, thank you to our committed rowers, your passion, commitment, and dedication to the sport have really shone through the weekend with all your hard work and training paying off.

Congratulations to our senior rowers who celebrated their last regatta under the Cathedral banner and Congratulations to our junior year 8 rowers competing in their first ever state regatta, I hope you have fallen more in love with the sport and that you will continue to build your passion through your senior years.

Another shout-out goes to our year 8 and 9s battling conditions and always showing up to help the athletes on and off the water. I know you may not have walked away with the results you wanted but your resilience, teamwork, and positive attitudes are a true credit to you, I hope you keep training hard and reaching for those goals!

I hope you all have a well-deserved rest.

Kind regards

TCS NETBALL – Season 2022 Celebration and Awards

It was a beautiful evening of celebration recently for our Pearl, Topaz and Opal netballers at their end-of-season netball dinner in the Rock Centre. This year’s theme was ‘Blockbuster Movies’ which saw each team do a stellar job of decorating their table, where we had the likes of Titanic to Tangled and Jumanji to Grease. The atmosphere was lovely all evening with teams and their coach’s sharing stories of their season together and announcing their team award recipients.

Umpires were recognised and celebrated for their outstanding service, as well as coaches being acknowledged for their dedication to our teams. Major award winners for the evening were Miliame Mocelutu who was announced as ‘Student Coach of the Year’ and Mikealie Payne who received the new perpetual award for ‘Club Contribution’ donated by and to be named in recognition of Mrs Debbie Bennett-Rauch. The official proceedings concluded with a tearful farewell to our departing Year 12 netballers and a heartfelt tribute to Mrs Debbie Bennett-Rauch who is retiring from netball coaching after 15 years of service to our club and whose presence will be missed immensely.

After a night filled with gratitude and celebration of a great season of netball, attendees then kicked up their heels and enjoyed some energetic dancing for the remainder of the evening led enthusiastically by our senior players on the stage.

Middle & Senior School Athletics Carnival 2022

The Middle and Senior School students enjoyed another beautiful winter’s day at the ‘Red-Track’ competing in the 2022 Interhouse Athletics Carnival. Organising 600+ students at an external school event is something that John Rauch and the supporting staff make look effortless, and they should be congratulated on another successful sports carnival.

MTB Academy 2022

MTB Academy 2022

Welcome, Nick Verhoeven.

The Cathedral School is proud to welcome Mr. Nick Verhoeven as the new Mountain Bike Academy Coordinator.

Head of Junior School, Mr. Luke Baills highlighted Nick’s enthusiasm for the sport and strong organisation skills as key factors of his appointment “Nick is passionate for the sport of mountain biking and is a highly organised and connected member of the North Queensland community. We are excited to support Nick as he builds on the outstanding work of Charlize Penny, Jesse Smith, and Tom Hollis (founding students of the MTB Academy in 2020)”.

Nick also has a connection with the school through his daughter Alyssa who is currently studying Year 12 at Cathedral.

“A little about me… I am married and the father of three children, Alyssa, and twins Shannon and Jordan.” Nick said. “I was originally involved in Athletics, represented Australia at the 1990 Oceania Games in Fiji and spent some time at Penn State University in the USA. Following a few injuries, I took up riding, specifically Mountain biking due to it being more nature based and allowing for exploration on dirt roads and trails. I generally compete in Mountain Bike races over 70km in length across the country and ride a Single-Speed, ie No Gears.”

Locals may also know of Nick via his involvement with Townsville financial business Hallerwealth over the past 21 years. “After a long career in the Finance Industry, I was looking for a change in lifestyle and a position I could bring my passion for riding, being active, and enjoying the outdoors. I had originally planned to take six months off and plan for the next challenge, but after only two months, this incredible opportunity arrived. The fact this position became available at an amazing school was just a bonus.” said Nick. “The reason I love Mountain biking is that it allows an outlet to the crazy, busy, and stressful life we all live in. Riding is my meditation and allows me to forget about work, deadlines, everything that is happening in the world, and just focus on the trail whilst enjoying the outdoors and all it offers.”

“My aim for the Academy is to allow an avenue for all students to get involved in an activity that is not only fun and healthy but can literally take you places, either riding to school or the shops, riding for pleasure, or getting involved in races locally or other locations in Australia, or around the world. Mountain Biking is a Commonwealth and Olympic sport so the opportunities are endless!”

The MTB Academy is open to all students Prep to Year 12. All you need is a can-do attitude, a bike (any bicycle), helmet and a smile. If you don’t have a bike or helmet, Cycle de Vie can give you all the help you need with 1% of all sales coming back to the Academy.
