Sports Awards 2022

The Middle and Senior School celebrated the year in sport with the annual Sports Awards assembly in the Rock Centre.

Head of Sport, John Rauch acknowledged the increasing diversity of sports at The Cathedral School and the high level of success and representation by Cathedral students on a local, state, and national level, both within the school program and independently. Congratulations to all students, staff, and families who have dedicated their time and commitment to their sport and balancing this with other school curricula.

Creative Generation Excellence Awards

Congratulations to Year 12 students Lily, Ty, and Dakota who were invited to exhibit their final Visual Art pieces in the Creative Generation Excellence Awards. This exhibition showcases the most outstanding visual artworks by senior high school students in North Queensland, and all three girls should be commended for their amazing pieces. Thank you to Jenna Dann for your support.

The work will be exhibited at The Drill Hall Studio in North Ward from Oct 9-30th and is free to view.

Eisteddfod Excellence

At the first Junior School assembly for Term 4 we acknowledged the effort and commitment by our students who participated in the 2022 Eisteddfod Program. Head of Junior School Mr. Luke Baills made special mention of the Junior School Percussion Ensemble who achieved the highest score across the entire Eisteddfod with 96/100. Pictured are all of the students in Junior School who participated and/or received awards in this year’s Eisteddfod.

Art Extravaganza

This year’s Art Extravaganza was another huge success with a unique piece on display by each child from the Early Learning Centre through to Year 6. Visitors were provided an opportunity to contribute by creating their own pieces on the ‘sticky note’ wall of art, or the colourful and thoughtful ‘rock art’ collection.

Scholarship Reunion

Scholarship Reunion

Katelyn’s journal from her Bell Shakespeare Teachers Scholarship reunion.
by Katelyn Doyle – Senior School Teacher (English, Philsophical Inquiry, Humanities, Christian Ed)
Tuesday 4 October 2022
‘What an amazing whirlwind trip to Sydney to catch up with the Bell Shakespeare theatre company and my fellow scholarship recipients from 2007.
I have returned home feeling incredibly blessed to have had this life-changing experience 15 years ago that has led to a life-long relationship with the amazing institution of Bell Shakespeare. Joanna Erskine, Head of Education at Bell, spoke warmly about the legacy our group has left within the company and how they are forever grateful for our involvement, yet it was apparent that we were the ones that feel that the connections we made and the opportunities we were afforded were priceless.
We toured Bell Shakespeare’s new space at Pier 2/3 at the Walsh’s Bay Arts Precinct, beneath the impressive vista of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. We were able to look at the pre-production designs for the upcoming The Lovers musical which will open at the Opera House later this month. A highlight for myself was seeing John Bell’s library at the rooms, even if not all the books were on the shelves just yet. Unfortunately, not everyone could make the reunion, and so we Zoomed in with those still keeping the love of Shakespeare alive in the far-flung reaches of the country. To cap off a wonderful afternoon, my Bell Shakespeare compatriots and I went to the iconic Belvoir St Theatre to see a preview of Looking for Alibrandi. It was a wonderful weekend sharing a love of the Arts and all things Shakespeare.’

Saturday 1 October 2022
‘So, this morning I am just a little excited. I am off to Sydney to catch up with the crowd from Bell Shakespeare. In 2007, I was lucky enough to be awarded one of the inaugural Bell Shakespeare teacher scholarships. I was teaching in Charters Towers at the time, and the amazing education department at Bell were keen to bring Shakespeare to every corner of our vast land.

Although it is 15 years old, one of our organisers, Linda Lorenza, still has this map in her study, showing where all of the Bard-loving scholarship recipients hail.

We worked for five days with academics from various universities to hone out skills. We were very focussed on ensuring Shakespeare was accessible to all students and that our teaching was engaging. It was an action-packed week with many highlights, one of which was attending production rehearsals and meeting John Bell himself. We even made it into Time magazine! The best part of the scholarship, however, has been the connections I have made with other teachers from regional areas. We have shared resources long after our scholarship concluded and continue to assist each other to make the Bard for all time. I truly cannot wait to arrive and see these amazing educators and visionaries again. Sydney awaits!’

Cathedral Rowing – Best in QLD

Cathedral Rowing – Best in QLD

Congratulations State Champions – for the second year in a row we can say we are the best rowing school in Queensland!
by Kim Brown – Rowing Coach

The 3 days of competition, ever-changing conditions, and gruelling heat were no match for our Cathedral athletes. I could not be prouder of our athletes’ attitudes, teamwork, and comradery, they banded together to ensure everyone was supported no matter the results. With our dedicated athletes overcoming challenges and working together as a team we have arrived safely home with 10.5 Gold, 6.25 Silver, and 2.75 Bronze bringing us to a total of 19.5 medals. 6 more gold than any other school!

As we all come down from the high that has been the last few days, I would like to start with a few special thank you. Firstly, a big thank you to Terri Talbot for agreeing to come along and assist with the supervision of the kids, you were amazing! Another big thank you to Jacob Groves and Shaun Keough for driving the trailer to Bundaberg and back, without these two coaches we would not have had boats to row. Thank you to the coaches for all their hard work and effort in the lead-up to states and to all the coaches that came on the trip. Without our brilliant coach’s passion for the sport, we would not be where we are today. And finally, thank you to our committed rowers, your passion, commitment, and dedication to the sport have really shone through the weekend with all your hard work and training paying off.

Congratulations to our senior rowers who celebrated their last regatta under the Cathedral banner and Congratulations to our junior year 8 rowers competing in their first ever state regatta, I hope you have fallen more in love with the sport and that you will continue to build your passion through your senior years.

Another shout-out goes to our year 8 and 9s battling conditions and always showing up to help the athletes on and off the water. I know you may not have walked away with the results you wanted but your resilience, teamwork, and positive attitudes are a true credit to you, I hope you keep training hard and reaching for those goals!

I hope you all have a well-deserved rest.

Kind regards
Kim
